Role at Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers

Lee Coleman is the majority owner and Managing Partner of Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers. He co-founded the firm in 1985 with J. Marshall Hughes and has played a central role in its growth from a small practice into a regional personal injury law firm with multiple offices across Kentucky, Tennessee, and affiliated operations in other states.

He has over 30 years of legal experience focused on personal injury litigation, courtroom advocacy, and firm operations. Early in his career, he served as a prosecutor in Warren County, Kentucky, where he tried approximately 50 jury trials before moving into private practice.

At Hughes & Coleman, he was originally responsible for litigation and courtroom strategy, including trial work and case development in personal injury matters. Over time, his focus expanded into firm-building, marketing strategy, and long-term operational growth.

Early Career and Legal Background

Before founding Hughes & Coleman, Lee Coleman worked as:

  • A prosecutor in Warren County, Kentucky
  • An associate attorney in private practice working on consumer bankruptcy cases

During this period, he gained early experience in courtroom litigation and client representation, including exposure to consumer financial hardship cases that later influenced his approach to client-centered personal injury work.

He began his own practice in the mid-1980s before co-founding Hughes & Coleman in 1985.

Marketing and Firm Growth Background

Lee Coleman was among the early adopters of legal advertising in his market. In the 1980s, he used print and later television advertising to attract clients, at a time when such practices were uncommon and often controversial within the legal industry.

Hughes & Coleman became one of the first law firms in its region to use television advertising for personal injury cases. The firm later challenged restrictions on legal advertising language, contributing to broader changes in how law firms were permitted to describe their services.

This experience shaped his long-term interest in legal marketing, client acquisition systems, and law firm growth strategy.

Co-Founder of M&L Legal Marketing and Management

Lee Coleman co-founded the M&L Legal Marketing and Management Conference in the early 2000s alongside Marshall Hughes.

M&L was created as a private, invite-only peer group for personal injury law firm owners and senior operators. The goal was to create a forum where mid-market firms could openly discuss marketing performance, operational challenges, and business strategy without competitive constraints.

The group meets twice a year and includes approximately 120 personal injury law firm leaders.

Role in M&L

M&L is structured as a peer-driven group rather than a speaker-led conference. Lee Coleman’s role is centered on facilitating and maintaining the environment that allows operators to share openly and learn from one another.

Sessions include roundtables, presentations, and open discussion focused on real-time challenges facing personal injury law firms, including intake systems, marketing performance, staffing, and profitability.

Recognition and Professional Standing

Lee Coleman has been recognized for his work in personal injury law, including:

  • Selection as a Kentucky Super Lawyer in personal injury law
  • AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell

He has also maintained a long-standing practice focused on representing injured clients in motor vehicle accidents and workplace injury cases.

Personal Background

Lee Coleman lives in Kentucky and has three sons, including two who practice law and one who is a physician. He is married to retired Warren District Court Judge Hon. JoAnn Spinks Coleman.

Outside of his legal work, he is involved in family life and activities including travel, golf, cycling, and skiing.
